JEFBOT.262_Hairy Situation

Those of you following my Twitter feed might have read about my frustration in getting a screen protector on my iPad a week or two ago. Seems every time I would begin applying the sheet of plastic, little pieces of lint and dust would be instantly pulled toward the screen and lodge themselves between the protector and iPad surface, creating tiny bubbles I couldn’t squeeze out. I destroyed the first screen protector and would’ve crumpled the second out of frustration (luckily I had three) had a kind Twitterer not pointed this video out to me: http://tinyurl.com/2cjtk8o (thanks, @MissAddict!). The best part of the video is the “tape technique” at the end, showing how to get dust particles off your screen protector. Totally works, and now I have a beautiful-looking iPad, with protection that you’d barely know was there.

  1. This is too true, Mr. OCDbot! Hahahahaha… Other than the “Aaaaak!,” no dialogue is necessary. Fantastic strip, bot. I love jefbot’s expression and the way you drew the floating hair. And little Abraxas is so cute yet a tad lewd. ;-) Great job, man! …as usual.

    Oh..and FIRST!!! :-D

    • shootzee says:

      yup, first!

and thanks for the kudos – glad you liked the strip. although what’s lewd about Abraxas doing a little scratching? tell me you weren’t looking at his ferret crotch. ;)

  2. ContableEnorme says:

    SECOND!

Hahahahaha. Again, great expression and all your readers know this experience, no words needed.

    And thanks by the video.

  3. shanna says:

Third! This is the earliest i’ve gotten my comment in for a while. :)

Abraxas!!!!!! It’s so good to see him again. Even if he is getting your iPad all hairy. ;)

  4. Maryz says:

This reminds me of the feather in Forest gump movie. It too knew exactly where to go.

  5. Funnyshaffer says:

Brillinat! I HATE those plastic shields… No matter how hard you try to get it on just right, the stupid things bubble up! I loved this strip, I heard classical music while the hair was blowing through the air!

  6. EvilStepQueen says:

OOOH man when my hubby was applying his new shield, I’m not sure what happend, but the whole thing shifted and fell on the floor. It took him over half an hour picking off the “floor crumblies” … but … Jefbot had posted a video with the “tape method” on it, and that helped tremendously!! He was soooo frusterated!!

    • shootzee says:

luckily, the company i ordered my screen protectors from sent three per packet, ESQ, so i wasn’t too worried about ruining the first one. once i started getting some lint on my second one though, i was starting to sweat it. good thing the tape method from the video worked, or i would’a been screwed. or just had to live with all the lint bubbles on my screen. :P

glad that vid helped your hubby!

  7. Animie fan says:

Dude, I feel your pain. I just got the thing unpeeled had it put down and there’s the huge air bubble and right in the middle of it is my dogs hair. I new it got every where but this is rediculous. And do you know were to find stuff for a Zune?

    • shootzee says:

glad you could feel my pain, Animie fan. when i had two cats and a cockatiel, things were even worse! feathers and dander everywhere!

i’d check out Amazon.com for Zune stuff. how do you like yours? i was thinking about getting one several months back, but never did.

  8. Jaeh says:

    2 things:

Brilliant! I need one of those, too, and thanks for the video link, and OC, dude. OC.

    Abraxas = so. cute. :D

    • shootzee says:

i got the 3-pack of “Premium Crystal Clear Screen Protectors,” Jah, and it works pretty well. doesn’t seem to have the “rainbow effect” some other screen protectors have, which is nice.

      Abraxas! woo! :D

  9. Shay says:

Putting my screen protector on my Motorola Cliq was torture… I can understand your pain. Luckly someone clued me in to using a credit card to smooth/push the bubbles out, so I only ruined one in frustration.

    • shootzee says:

took me forever to get a protector on my iPhone 3G, Shay, but I finally got it to look perfect. unfortunately, that was a couple years ago, and now it’s peeling around the home button. not sure whether to get a new protector or wait it out ’til i get a new phone. :P

      • Shay says:

Wait ’til you get a new phone, that’s my opinion. Of course, if you’re like me, the peeling protector will bother you and you won’t be able to wait…. so good luck either way!

  10. Stan Yan says:

    HAIRlarious! Great strip, Jeff!

  11. JF#300 says:

    hope u got insurance jb

  12. TheBean says:

You could just wait like five years for this Gorilla glass to become the in thing, then you wouldn’t need screen protectors…just saying ;-)

    • shootzee says:

heheh. is the “gorilla glass” really that strong, TheBean? been hearing reports of iPhone 4′s gorilla glass shattering after a couple drops. still – it’s no doubt better than whatever’s protecting my iPad at the moment. :)

  13. Skeptible says:

But won’t Steve Jobs send a team of Apple Ninjas or something after you for suggesting that the iPad isn’t absolutely perfect as shipped?

I second the opinion that the depiction of the floating hair is excellent.

    • shootzee says:

uh, yeah, it is absolutely perfect as shipped, Skeptible. um, no need for steve to send apple ninjas my way! ;)

it’s just that i’m one of those people that can’t stand to have “naked” stylus or touchscreen electronics. all my Nintendo DS’s, cellphones and palm pilots have been protected for years! :D

thanks! glad you liked the hair.

  14. Sonitan says:

Michael’s right, you know? Your OCD will kill ya! It’s just an iPad. It has the power to attrack anything dusty and dirty and you’ll never be able to stop it. You’re doomed to keep cleaning it and cleaning it until your fingers fall off.

    *evil diabolical laugh of doom*
    8D

And the real “you” destroying two of the protectors made me laugh even more. My mom is looking weird at me now >__<

    • shootzee says:

you and Michael are both right, Sonitan – just like all the other devices i’ve tried to protect with screen savers, by the time it’s scratched enough to matter, it’s usually time to upgrade anyway. i’m always of a mind that i’m going to keep these things forever (which i do, actually!) which means i spend a lot of time keeping them in “like new” condition. probably the collector in me surfacing a bit there, too.

ha! your mom has every right to give you weird looks!!! ;)

  15. tyler_durden says:

and in the next strip..Abraxas gets shaved!!

  16. DaughterJudy says:

    gotta love those screen protectors.

  17. Alexander says:

“…protection you’d barely know was there.”

Auditioning for a condom commercial or something? :P

I know what you mean though. I’m hyper OCD when it comes to certain minute details, such as the air bubbles under screen protectors or messed up corners on stickers. Just bugs the living hell out of me.

And it’s just the little stuff too. My desk is a total mess, I hardly vacuum, and the file cabinet that I store all my important stuff in looks like a bomb went off inside.

    • shootzee says:

heh. Trojans should really get into the screen protector business, Alexander. they’d probably make a killing. and i’d love to be their spokesperson. ;)

and i totally get where you’re coming from, too: much like jefbot in the strip, my room is a complete disaster, but my electronics are in immaculate shape. and bubble-free, too!

  18. Steve says:

I’ve always suspected two things: Animal furs always find my nose (allergies to animal fur) and dust and hairs find every piece of electronics in the house and lodge and wedge and glue themselves into the spaces so it’s impossible to just blow it out, you have to get tweezers or cotton swab or something.

sigh…. great strip though! perfect reaction!

    • shootzee says:

thanks, Steve! yeah, pet sheddings know exactly where they’re not wanted, and lodge themselves into those spaces whenever possible. i can’t tell you how much hair and feathers i’ve found in my PC towers over the years. :P

  19. Jason (that crazy guy) says:

    Bahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  20. rinthia says:

No! Bubbles and stray Abraxas fur begone!

  21. Shanna says:

Here’s a review of the Last Airbender I thought you all might enjoy given Jefbot’s recent comic treatment of the subject. It’s from our local art movie house The Lyric Cinema:

It’s amazing what parents do for their kids. We give them ungodly sums of money throughout their lives, we put ourselves in harm’s way to protect them, we even lift cars off of them and perform other super-human feats driven by adrenaline to save them. This weekend I put myself through unspeakable horrors for my son Jack. We went to THE LAST AIRBENDER… Rarely have I seen a movie this bad. The only direct comparison worth drawing is to The Book Of Mormon, The Movie. Which fits well. Where as The Book Of Mormon movie is a cheesy low budget production, put together by non-professionals, functioning as a visual aid to the book, THE LAST AIRBENDER is a high budget extravaganza, put together by the professionally handicapped, to function as an unintelligent watering down of, not only a children’s cartoon, but of a western understanding of Buddhism. M. Night Shylamanamamaanan has really outdone himself here and will forever be known as Michael Bay’s retarded kid brother. I would recommend this film if you have a professional curiosity about how untalented people become pop culture icons. But other than that, it’s only good from a Mystery Science Theater 3000 vantage point. And there is plenty to make fun of. The costumes are straight out of a THE KING AND I off off Broadway production which had to take damaged goods from a Halloween costume manufacturer. The acting could only be worse if it were full of American Idol hopefuls. The Middle Eastern guy from THE DAILY SHOW plays the bad guy, for god-sake. How am I supposed to take that seriously?! Honestly! I think they even recycled special effects that were rejected by the first Tron movie. Now, let’s get this straight. I do enjoy the cartoon. My boys both watch it and love it. I can also see how this film would appeal to 4 year olds (Jack likes anything that moves on a screen…to the point where he watched a Spanish language melodrama with his Grammie). But how do you get halfway through making this film (for $150 million, I might add) and NO ONE realizes that it plays like a High School theater production! AND destroys a terrific cartoon to boot! I thought children’s cartoons were supposed to be “Low Art” compared to movies…boy does this film disprove that common misconception.

    • shootzee says:

ha! pretty brutal (and funny!) review, and i agree with almost all of it, Shanna! the more i watch of the cartoon (up to chapter 18 of book 1), the more i see how much of a disaster the movie was. the characters are completely wrong in the film and none of the humor’s carried over. i’m kind of glad i hadn’t seen the series before watching the film or i would’ve been stewing in my theater seat. i wonder if they’re gonna give m. night another shot at it with the sequel? let’s hope not.

  22. @Shanna: Wow uh, yeah. *Climbs wall of text*… yes I have heard that The Last Airbender was bad by pretty much everyone who saw it. Big surprise. Not.

Nice strip! This *always* happens to me no matter how careful I am… :P

    • Shanna says:

Yea, but it’s not just a (not surprising) bad review of it. I thought it was a pretty funny bad review. Sorry you didn’t find it as entertaining as I did.

    • shootzee says:

i didn’t hate the film when i saw it, thedualityprinciple, i was just kinda “meh” about it. until i watched the series, that is. now, i definitely hate it! heheh.

and yeah, it’s just one of life’s natural laws that all pet hair, dust and lint in a room will be instantly attracted to a fresh screen protector. always.

  23. Kat says:

Hehe, from your last two strips I can’t decide who you’re more like my uncle or my bf. I tease both about how OCD there are over their stuff.
