JEFBOT.238_Hair Apparent

I must admit, the first time I heard the term “Brazilian Blowout” I thought it was something obscene, probably because everything about those words, especially together, just sounds that way. I can barely even explain why it sounds obscene without putting an age gate on this post. This could be why it’s such a popular treatment, I suppose. Suffice to say, if it doesn’t sound at least somewhat raunchy to you, you have a cleaner mind than I, and should be commended for it.

Anyhow, once I was assured by my sister Laura that the process was wholly innocent, I let myself be her guinea pig when she needed people to experiment on – and I was happy with the results. I’ve documented (way back in JEFBOT.04) just how unruly my hair can be, especially upon waking or after getting it wet, and the biggest testament I can give to the power of the Brazilian Blowout is that my  styling cap has been retired for the past 3 months.

If you’d like to give it a try and live in the Los Angeles area, my sister Laura, a licensed hair stylist, has offered to give a discount to JEFbot readers. Just email me and I’ll pass along your interest to her. Here’s a link to find out more about the process:

    sounds… er… fascinating. : )

  2. eleventeen says:

I think it sounds dirtier when you say your sister gave it to you… just sayin.

  3. Cogwell says:

i would so do it ‘cept for the fact that i am bald. now, if your sister can set me up with a turtle wax…… lol.

    great comic bot.

  4. tyler_durden says:

this just speaks of all kinds of reasons to keep a shaved head.(much like me.)

    • shootzee says:

man, sometimes i totally feel like taking shears to my hair, t_d, but the top of my head’s kinda lumpy, and i think you need a nicely-shaped skull to pull that off.

  5. Maryz says:

Wow, I didnt got the joke even without getting what brazilian blowout might be. And it doesnt sound any shady to me. Does that mean I qualify as having a cleaner mind than you?

Still hillarious. BTW what are you reading?

I have to drink me some orange juice.

    • Shanna says:

It is probably a slang thing. I know English is not your first language, so you might not have the same associations with the word “blow”. I won’t go any further than that or ‘Bot will have to put up that age gate.

      • Stonefoot says:

The meaning of blowout that I recall is “a really wild party” (probably involving college students or teens doing a lot of things they wouldn’t think of doing while sober). I checked www (dot) urbandictionary (dot) com and found two groups of newer definitions, one being a style of haircut and another being something that would require a lot of very unpleasant cleaning up afterwards. Only one (off about 40) was connected to the slang meaning of blow.

The common use of Brazilian, however, is for a style achieved by removing hair using wax (i.e., “waxing”)… “down there” – so the combination is suggestive without having any identifiable meaning.

Another meaning of “blow” is “cocaine”. Completely unrelated to anything here, even by innuendo.

And the original meaning of “blowout” is “the catastrophic failure of a car or truck tire while driving”. Also completely unrelated to anything here.

    • Stonefoot says:

Looks like an issue of “Discover”, a popular science magazine. (Not to be confused with “Popular Science” which is also (surprise!) a popular science magazine.

    • shootzee says:

i’m glad Shanna and Stonefoot explained the various ways these words could be interpreted so i don’t have to, Maryz! and the strip is only as “outright sexual” as your mind allows it to be, and since there was nothing “dirty” in your initial interpretation, i’d say “yes” your mind is cleaner than mine. which is a good thing. :)

Stonefoot’s got it right: jefbot’s reading a Discover magazine.

  6. Spanky McBubbles says:

I was giggling through the first 2 panels, and then the 3rd panel did me in. This was a great one, and ya got me laughing to start my day. Kudos! PS: Love the flashback/throwback strip you threw in there with the links in your blog.

  7. Charles says:

    Hahaha…a ‘brazilian blowout’ sounds…disturbing…

  8. Pixie says:

*dies laughing* Holy Pixie Sprinkles Jeff…Are you SURE it’s on the head…wait…umm…the top of the…OMG *blush* nevermind. Pay no attention to that Pixie behind the curtain!

    I can hear it now….

Announcer: “Come on down to the Hair Helmet Hut! We’re having a Brazilian Blow out special..EVERYTHING MUST GO!!!!!”

    *giggling*

    • shootzee says:

HA! i think you just won the “dirtiest mind” prize, Pixie! :D

      • Pixie says:

WOO HOO Something else to display on the Hades Bookcase.

I’d like to thank the Man Downstairs. Keep my seat warm pal. OH and of course every one of you who made this possible. And my Mom and Dad from whom I get my personality and insanity. I love you guys! And lastly, *sniff* all of you at JefBot who just allow me to be. *sob sob*

  9. Jaeh says:

…I see that some fellow posters have made jokes.

I’ll do nothing of that sort.

    *just bursts out laughing*

*wipes tear* yeah okay, I’m done now. Sounds neat, though… if not for the… erm, name. The name disturbs me. the hair treatment sounds… neat.

  10. Shanna says:

Um, but your hair’s not curly, is it? Why do you need straightening? Doesn’t being half Asian take care of that?

Yea, Cornfather’s assumption cracked me up too. That sounds not just disturbing, but dangerous. And I don’t even want to think about your sister being involved in the process. Mental scaring may have occurred… ;)

    • shootzee says:

yeah, my hair’s pretty curly – especially if it gets wet and i don’t dry it right away, Shanna. curly and wavy, which is a pretty common trait among hapa peeps. on the set of Grey Skies the hairdressers had to take 20 minutes to straighten my hair with a straightening iron every day!

i’d just let it be curly if it looked cool, but i usually look like a crazy person if i just let it do its thing. hence, the need for a styling cap or Brazilian Blowout. :)

and yeah, the mental imagery evoked by the term for this hair smoothing technique is disturbing enough without adding in the “sister” factor. :P

      • Shanna says:

Luckily when my son read this one, he didn’t get it. Good to know he’s still reasonably innocent. (At least in terms of sex.)

        • shootzee says:

yeah, if he understood the references, then it’s time to worry. ;)

          • Pixie says:

And I quote from one of my stage shows….

“If we tell a joke and your child laughs, it’s not our fault. We don’t live with you. You should be ashamed!”

Now image three buxom pirate hussies telling this to a crowd. It got a huge laugh.

  11. sis says:

I agree. The name, Brazilian Blowout, does sound somewhat naughty. I think they wanted a recognizable name, something you’d remember. Guess what? Mission accomplished. It’s really more of a smoothing process than straightening. But, it’s awesome!

  12. Funnyshaffer says:

Brilliant! I LOVE your face in the last frame. I laughed out loud!!!
    …is that what they’re calling it these days… ; )

  13. Jeff Payton says:

Awesome! I’ve never HAIRed that one before!!

  14. Sharra says:

Lol. I’m actually still chuckling. If I think that was the funniest strip you’ve ever done, does that mean there’s something wrong with me? (If it does I think I know what it is: too much Penny Arcade.) Jefbot’s face in the last panel is still making me laugh.

    • shootzee says:

thanks for the chuckles, Sharra! the guys at Penny Arcade have corrupted many minds, so if they somehow predisposed you to the humor in today’s strip, i owe them a debt of gratitude. :)

  15. Ha! Super funny, bot! Love the dialogue. I’m also impressed with how well you walk the blue line in this strip yet you never cross it. I love your face in the last panel, too. Now, how can I get Lor to give me one of these Brazilian Blowouts? ;-)

    • shootzee says:

thanks, MC! that “blue” line is pretty thin, but i figure in this strip, it’s the readers own minds that will cause that line to be crossed or not. :)

  16. MissMercurial says:

Nice play on the old stereotype/joke of a girl saying she can’t go out because she has to wash her hair :P

  17. Xinda says:

    Great Strip!

The Lor gave me a “Brazilian Blowout” and it looks awesome!

And you know what they say, “The family that Blowsout together,
    stays together!”

  18. Xinda says:

And Thank you and Cool Hand for my Brazilian Blowout Shampoo! I just found the bag yesterday! I Love it!!!!

  19. DaughterJudy says:

    OMG >< TMI lol

  20. Sonitan says:

    *LOL*
Oh god! Michael’s face in the last panel: PRICELESS!!!
    *ROFL*
I already gotten to the conclussion that human minds and just twisted and always thinking the wrong thing about anything. (But got to admit that the name of that “product” does SCREAM to be misunderstanded!)
    *evil laugh of doom*

    • shootzee says:

bot’s face seems to be getting most of the love from readers in this one so i’m happy you got a kick out of the Cornfather’s expression as well, Sonitan!

and yeah, the human mind is pretty twisted, no doubt about that. especially when that mind is connected to an *evil laugh of doom*! ;)

  21. Rinthia says:

I didn’t get it until Cornfather came back and Jefbot explained.
I’m officially not a pervert! XD

  22. Slave1 says:

I must admit, my mind must be in the gutter too because I was sitting here reading the first couple of panes wondering why you didnt invite me to this spectacular event! Then the last panel came in and I realized it was nothing that I needed.

    • shootzee says:

sometimes the gutter is a fun place to be, Slave1. and the next time i hear about a Brazilian Blowout party, i’ll be sure and sign you up. :D

  23. Leithal says:

GAH!!! my dirty mind returns !!!! DX good job JB!

  24. NeoDarklight says:

LOL! makes me think of Manga Head. It SOUNDS dirty, but it’s actually a VERY strong hair gel that lets you style your hair into literally ANYTHING that doesn’t defy the laws of physics.

    • shootzee says:

yeah, that sounds pretty dirty, too, NeoDarklight, especially when you consider the “perv” factor in some manga and anime! (i’m thinking of a few titles i’ve seen with tentacles in ‘em.) still, if i could make my hair look like Goku’s, that would be pretty sweet!

  25. Skeptible says:

This is why I love my haircut. It’s a 1/2 inch long when I’m overdue for a cut (and I am). It’s even easier to maintain than bald (no shaving) and still hides whatever shameful skull irregularities might be lurking up there. Just wash it, towel it, smooth it down and go.

Blowout had me thinking “party”, the “Brazilian” had me wondering just what sort of party it was.

    • shootzee says:

sounds like a very practical haircut, Skeptible. my hair hasn’t been that short in years, perhaps decades! if i didn’t need to look like my headshot, i might just be tempted to go that route.

and what kind of party did you come up with? did it involve waxing?

  26. Katiroth says:

This has made me look up salons in my area that does it. I’ve been looking for a straightening/smoothing process that won’t kill my hair, and this looks like it could work. …Alas, it’s harder to find salons that do it in Missouri than the LA area.

Now…we won’t go into what I thought when I first heard Brazilian Blowout… Coughcough.

    • shootzee says:

too bad you don’t live in L.A., Katiroth – my sister would give you a discount on the process! if you find a good salon in Missouri that will do it though, i say go for it. totally helped my crazy hair out, without burning or killing it.

and yeah, certain “things” come to mind, even still, when i hear “Brazilian Blowout.” i won’t say exactly those “things” are, though. coughcough. ;)

  27. Deaconvorbis says:

I can sympathise man, nothing worse than hair that wnts to act like the garden hosepipe. You know how you spend hours getting the kinks and knots out and carefully coil it up before putting it in the shed only to find that the next time you go in there its not only uncoiled, knotted all to hell and has somehow ensnared the lawnmover, barbecue and bicycle in such a fashion that to even think of touching it is going to knock eveything over. My hair has been growing now for three years (this time) and unless i really desparately want straight hair i just bully it into a ponytail to save a lot of hassle.

Love this strip man, only read it now (five to four a.m.) ‘cos Valve have just made one of my all time fav games available for free download, ah well bye bye social life for another couple of weeks.

    There will be cake!

    • shootzee says:

three years, Deaconvorbis!? wow! i can understand you bullying it into a ponytail – i don’t think even a Brazilian Blowout could tame my hair after three years!

and i hear ya about Valve – now that they’re offering Steam for Mac (not to mention that free download!), i think i’m going to be getting some cake soon, too. (it’s so delicious and moist!) :)

  28. Twigus_Maximus says:

Awesome, I read Discover as well =3

  29. jjmblue7 says:

I by no means have a clean mind, but when I first read it I thought maybe it has to do with soccer. I’m not into sports so i wouldn’t know if it was a real event or not, lol!

  30. Stan Yan says:

Hilarious! How did I miss seeing this one? Now I’ve got a strange craving for Brazilian BBQ…
