JEFBOT.211_The Legend Begins

And so this storyline about The Cornfather’s diet comes to a close. Which isn’t to say there won’t be The Further Adventures of Chubman and Scrawn at some point, just not in the immediate future.

This little arc was a real blast to write and draw, so I’m extremely happy with the response it’s gotten from you guys. From the geyser of vomit to the Powers of Scrawn/Chub to the Cornfather and jefbot’s new superhero personas, this story took me to a few places I didn’t realize I was going, so thanks for indulging me. This kind of stuff is why I love doing JEFbot so much!

If you’d like to visit/revisit the storyline check it out here:

BTW, As I’m sure many of you have already noticed, that last panel is an homage to one of my favorite graphic novels. Anyone care to name it?

I love the costumes! I can’t wait for the adventures in food crimes you’ll be solving! …and the short film spin-off the The Cornfather no doubt has planned!
    Excellent strip as always Jefbot!

  2. Spanky McBubbles says:

Love this one! The Dark Knight Returns! Batman and Robin style, well female Robin who then went on to become Cat Woman, right? I love the costumes for JB and CF, and I couldn’t stop laughing for a good 2 minutes here.

That 3rd panel with them daydreaming got me, and then when I got to the 4th I was a mix of laughing and being all nostalgic like. This was another awesome one! :D

  3. toothandclaw says:

Aw man, I SOOO need a Chubman and Scrawn t-shirt!

  4. Cemalidor says:

Ok, i was drinking innocently some tea as i saw the last picture.. :XD

Perhaps your guys should have a look at ‘City of Heroes’. ;)

  5. Maryz says:

Wow. Just… Wow. That third panel is maybe better than the last, but only if you see the whole strip. As stand-alone the costumed hero wannabes would make a good walpaper. Hint-hint.

    • shootzee says:

was hoping someone would request a wallpaper, Maryz! heheh. that last panel looks really good blown-up, so when i had to shrink it down for the comic i was like, “awww.” i’ll try and get that done and posted to the site this weekend.

  6. shanna says:

    O. M. G. I totally LOVE it!!!! You need someone with sewing skillz to make you costumes for real for Halloween (well, yea, it’s kinda far off and something better might come up in the mean time, but you TOTALLY need to do it!!!!) Any JefBot fans out there who are good with a sewing machine? I’m sorry to say that I am adequate at best or I would do it for ya! Of course I instantly thought of crocheting Chubman and Scrawn action figures, but if that ever happens it will have to wait till May till I’m done with school and have my life back.

I love Scrawn’s goggles and gloves. Are you a Dr. Horrible fan? They made me think of him. That whole last panel is beautifully drawn and the colors are just awesome.

I totally agree with toothandclaw and Maryz about the t-shirts and the wallpaper. I need both. I would buy a Chubman and Scrawn t-shirt in a heartbeat. :D

    • shootzee says:

Chubman and Scrawn action figures! that would be awesome, shanna. maybe i’ll buy some Justice League figures and repaint them or something. not many chubby heroes, though. hmmm. :)

and i think with as low-tech as their costumes are, i could whip up a “Scrawn” costume to wear for Halloween with some fabric paints, goggles and kneeguards. i think the more “homemade” looking, the better.

and thanks for the input – looks like the demand is there for a Chubman and Scrawn tee! :D

    • shootzee says:

oh, and i AM a Doctor Horrible fan! heheh. those gloves jefbot’s wearing are actually from that storyline where he pulls the Cornfather out of bot’s hatchback using butter, tho. :)

  7. Deaconvorbis says:

Excellent, although for me its the third panel that sells it. Blank expressions and minds hitting the rev limiter. Awesome work as always, and that’s why i’ll keep coming back.

  8. sacobin says:

I LOVE this one Jefbot! It’s terrific!!!

  9. Sonitan says:

    *falls off chair laughing*
    Ouch!
    *keeps laughing on the floor*
    *Mother looks at me*
Mother: You’re going to ruin that beautiful vistorian goth skirt you just got… and we’re NOT spending any more money on another one until next month.
    @___@
Ack! Look what you made me do, jef!!!!
*runs to clean victorian goth skirt*
Still, it was worth it… Bwuahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!

    • shootzee says:

ha! your vignettes always crack me up, Sonitan. heheh. well, if your victorian goth skirt is permanently ruined, you can always convert it into some type of superhero outfit and roll with Chubman and Scrawn. ;)

  10. DaughterJudy says:

Nice one Bot. now you can plau ME2 (almost) guilt free

  11. i would’ve prefered to see you both in wonder woman costumes. but otherwise this was entertaining.

  12. Mark says:

Jefbot! This is so awesome! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Dark Knight Returns panel! Perfectly captured for you and the Cornfather. Though I could see you switch it up, you as Batman and the Cornfather as Robin. Just saying…. :-)

    • shootzee says:

thanks for the love(s) and glad you caught the reference to TDKR, Mark! yeah, if the composition didn’t call for it, jefbot totally would’ve been in the GD Batman role. ;)

  13. Stan Yan says:

OMG, the beat of panel 3 makes this strip! Awesome!

  14. Skipperdee says:

    DUDE!
Just the other day at work I squeeeeeezed through a Very Tight Spot, and I said aloud “The power of SCRAWN!”

Thanks in part to the Cornfather’s inspiration, I recently lost 30lbs. I’m delighted to learn that my accomplishment comes with a Super Power!

    We need t-shirts.

    • shootzee says:

HA! good for you, Skipperdee!!! were there any raised eyebrows when you did the yell?

wow – and DOUBLE good for you about the 30# you kissed goodbye. welcome to the Scrawn Club. :D

i think tees are a definite at this point. looks like i’m gonna be busy the next few weeks.

  15. Foxmouse says:

The idea of superheros is awesome, wonderful strip as always! I wonder what the female versions of Chubman and Scrawn would be? Maybe they’d have names like “Madam Plump” and “Lady Lanky.”

Oh geeze, now I gotta fight the urge to draw female versions of Chubman and Scrawn. *trembles* Fight it, fight…. it! >.<

  16. Melody says:

The Scrawn costume is a work of art. I’d pay to see the live action version of the comic heroes. Also, now you have something to go to costume parties as other than the Crow.

    • shootzee says:

you’re right, Melody! my friends will appreciate me retiring that Crow costume, at least. heheh. now if i can only convince Michael to dress up as Chubman…

  17. JEFBOT FAN #1 says:

Awesome! Didn’t think you could add anything to this storyline, but I can’t wait for the “further adventures”! :) Panel 4 would make a great poster, the super hero characters would make great t-shirts!

    • shootzee says:

thanks, JF1! funny you should mention a poster – i’m thinking about blowing that last panel up to poster-size, framing and hanging it in my apartment. i’ll let you guys know how that turns out if it happens. :)

  18. Sean Luke says:

If a legion of heroes is being formed, I’m sure my power to attract toddlers and tykes to run into my bad knees unannounced and knock me down could be helpful somehow…maybe in public places when parents lose their kids. Where do I sign up?

    • shootzee says:

well, we already have The Power of Chub to attract the kiddies, SL, but i’m sure we could find a use for your powers somewhere. i’ll e-mail you the sign-up sheet. ;)

  19. IDrankTooMuchRootBeer says:

Let me join I could be……
    Glassesguy

  20. Jed says:

Please tell me that you really do this. Also: you totally made yourself Girl Robin. (Alternate Reality Girl Robin, not Real Girl Robin Who Is Now Batgirl.)

    • shootzee says:

yeah, i’m okay with that, Jed. plus the robin from The Dark Knight Returns was the best robin EVER! and sadly, no. i don’t dress up and fight crime, though today’s strip might’ve pushed me over the edge. :)

  21. reynard61 says:

Scene: Exterior. Overlooking a large but un-named American city.

Voiceover (as heroic music plays in the background): “This is The City. It could be your city. It’s a city of commerce and industry, of work and play; but like any other city it has a criminal element. And to fight that element come a pair of heroes from their ‘Tower of Power of Tower’, endowed with a ‘Wealth of Stealth’ and other abilities far beyond those of mortal men. They are: Chubman and The Scrawn!” (Music swells to victorious finish.)

(I can’t help but wonder if Warner Animation might buy it on just that pitch alone…)

  22. Psynapse says:

Go go powa ranga! Wait… wrong heroes. Seriously though this strikes a note… I actually auditioned for Who Wants To Be A Superhero on Scifi a few years back. Had a seizure that prevented me from going to callbacks after sending in my video. A psychic having seizures probably isn’t a good thing. However the costume designs rock and I think I smell monthly spinoff material here, Jeff… that or I really REALLY need to wash my socks…

    • shootzee says:

sorry to hear about the seizures, Psynapse. i watched most of the first season of that show – The Chubman and Scrawn would’ve fit right in. heheh. did you have a costume?

      • Psynapse says:

Yeah I did. I still have it. I was actually at the WWTBASH table at the Emerald City Comicon 2008 in Seattle. It used to be a badass black, silver, and purple. The purple has since faded to fuschia so it looks pretty horrendous now but I kept it for sentimental reasons.

  23. Jeff Menapace says:

Oh HELL yeah! This is going to be awesome.

  24. Luemas says:

    Chubman and Scrawn for president?

  25. Steve says:

I get the sudden reminiscing of bluntman and cronic…..

    HEY WAIT A MINTUE!!

  26. Jeff Menapace says:

Also makes me flashback to “Mightiest Heroes” (or something like that) from the late 60′s. Remember Rope Man, Cuckoo Man, Diaper Man, Tornado Man, and Strong Man?

  27. maleficent says:

I love this strip. Sometimes I think what an imagination, where does he pull these storylines out of? Could I join your superhero gang, I’m really good at hurting people on accident while playing with them, I actually already have a cape and several thick metal arm shields.

  28. Zack says:

    Pro^2 man. Pro^2

  29. A great ending to a great arc! Way to go, bot!!! Love the last panel, man!I would be honored to assist you in saving Hollywood!

  30. Zanter says:

Just finished your archives, and wow, NICE comic you got here! I love your fresh humor and art style!

  31. nicobot says:

XD hahahaha just looove it just loooove it. How more hilarious can this comic be. Great art and story line as always jefbot.

  32. Holaved says:

Awesome stuff, as always, but one detail still nags…

    Panel four, bottom right: ‘Afterfin’?

    After the end of what?

Does this have anything to do with your mysterious statement of coming back to Chubamn and The Scrawn in a few months??

    Or AN ALIEN CONSPIRACY???

    HIDE YOUR HAMSTERS!!

    • shootzee says:

ha! while you should definitely hide your hamsters before those aliens show up again, Holaved, that little detail on the billboard you noticed is to give props to Frank Miller, the writer/artist behind the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, which that last panel homages. hence, “AFTER FM.” :)

  33. Zolen says:

XP awesome posing, now we need some awesome equipment…..anyone got batman on speed dial?

  34. CheddarMan says:

This is going to be an awesome arch. Hope they have a better time of it then Kick Ass.

    • shootzee says:

let’s hope, CheddarMan! i wouldn’t wanna see Corn or bot in a body cast. heheh. working on a Chubman and Scrawn storyline so hope to be drawing it within the next few months!

  35. Spanky McBubbles says:

And that Anonymous is I, as I forgot to put in my contact details here. Eesh what a doofus :P
