If you didn’t watch the original Battlestar Galactica that came out in 1978, and aren’t a fan of the latest Battlestar Galactica by Ron Moore which ended this past Friday, today’s strip might be somewhat confusing, I realize, but I wanted to do a strip commemorating the end of the latest series, which I feel is one of the very best shows on television, in any genre.
The original Battlestar Galactica was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. Starbuck, played by Dirk Benedict, was the coolest Viper pilot around, Commander Adama, played by Lorne Green, was the humans’ noble leader, and the Ovions were a strange, alien race that resembled bees and were a part of a sinister, Cylon plot. Most of this stuff was scrapped or changed in Ron Moore’s show, mostly for the better. But I do have a soft spot in my heart for the original, late 70s show and whenever I hear the sound of a Viper or Raider laser, a few chords from the original score, or the robotic voice of a Cylon Centurion, it completely takes me back to my youth.

And for those that came to the site over the past few days and saw this, my apologies. Turns out a lot of online comic strips didn’t get done over the past week since many of us webcomics creators were in Massachusetts at the New England Webcomics Weekend. you could even drive up here. it’s not that far.. it’s only an 18 hour drive. at least from seattle to sacramento. there’s a comicon the weekend after next in seattle.

Now everyone can get their Jefbot fix! (insert sigh of relief here.) And I for one was giggling at the first line delivered. I love how you slowly closed in on Jefbot and Cornfather, as the action figures seemed to get “bigger and blurrier”. Another great one!

Haha! Great strip Bot! Don’t you just love how old T.V. shows totally messed up their original idea. Ah well. I guess you can’t always have people in charge that enjoy things how they were in the books.
very true, Eptha! i remember the original Battlestar getting really wacky – with the characters’ uniforms turning white, and some kids getting superpowers once they reached an earth-like planet. weird.
Oh, if you haven’t watched the BSG finale, you’re in for a treat. I was never a big fan of the original… too campy for me, but the new one is grim and gritty… just the way I like my SciFi.
i loved the show, Stan, and am sorry to see it end. i was a little disappointed with the finale, but there were so many good episodes during the run of the series, that i’ll forgive them that slip at the end.

Funny story from the NY Comic Con: the last hour of the convention on Sunday, I’d decided that I’d stop working on my zombicatures, as the rest were mail-outs anyhow, and I’d try to put a dent in the huge pile of bookmarks I had intended to give out during the event that were still sitting in my suitcase. In offering bookmarks, I offered one to someone who just smirked at me and moved on. It wasn’t until he was surrounded by adoring fans that I realized it was Tahmoh Penikett, who plays Helo on BSG that I’d stupidly not recognized an actor from my favorite TV series.

I hadn’t realized we had so much in common (or were of just the same age). I whipped up a baby bib recently for a buddy of mine – just because we both remembered the old Star Blazers show. So his baby got a custom designed, one of a kind Star Blazers uniform-style baby bib (the green collar with the big arrow?) hand knit, cotton masterpiece…that he had to take home… and explain to his wife. Me, I refuse to get married so I won’t have to share my Star Wars figs from the 70s.
oOOOoooh… i wish i could wear baby bibs so i could get some Star Blazers attire from you, Tracy! if i could sew i’d at least have some Robotech duds to wear to conventions.
and i totally support your refusal to get married on account of your Star Wars figures collection – they’ll give you more happiness than a spouse ever could.
I love how the action figures play role as audience, watching the main actors Jefbot and the Cornfather.
